Engineering a Future With Purpose

For Roxanne Ehrig, the classroom and the track may seem like two different worlds, but each has taught her something about the other. The discipline required to balance structural engineering coursework with cross country and track & field has helped Ehrig develop a routine that allows her to succeed in both. Now entering her senior year, the Structural Engineering major in Muir College is taking those lessons beyond UC San Diego through professional experience, service and a growing vision for her future. Flipping the Switch: Triton Racing Goes Electric

July 30, 2026

After nearly 30 years of designing and building a formula race car powered by an internal combustion engine for the annual Formula Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) collegiate competition, the Triton Racing student team at UC San Diego flipped a switch in 2023 and went electric. For the first time, the team was able to bring a functioning formula race car running on its own battery power that they designed and built, to the Formula SAE Electric competition this June, representing three years of intense learning and work.  Full Story

Students Get an Intro to AI in First AI Major Class at UC San Diego

More than 100 undergraduate students enrolled in UC San Diego’s new AI major took their first major-specific course, CSE 25: Intro to AI, over winter quarter. The class aims to introduce AI principles that the students will see repeatedly over the next four years, and level the playing field between students who may have taken AI coursework on their own, and students for whom this is all new material. From Pong to PlayStation: This Class Uses Gaming to Teach Computer Science

How did we get from the two gray dots and two gray rectangles on a black background that made up ‘Pong’ to the complex, almost life-like graphics and sophisticated storytelling of today’s video games? About two dozen undergraduate students learned the answers to these questions – and more – in a new seminar for first-year students titled “A Technical History of Video Games.”   Full Story

UC San Diego Team Takes Third Place at SC25 Student Cluster Competition in St. Louis

A team of UC San Diego undergraduates incuding engineers and computer scientists won third place in the 2025 Student Cluster Competition (SCC25) at the International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage, and Analysis, held this year in St. Louis, Missouri. Transforming Computer Science Education in the Age of AI

Educators, education researchers and computer scientists are teaming up as part of a consortium led by the University of California San Diego to reshape the future of computer science education in the era of generative AI. The consortium, supported by $1.8 million from Google.org, Google’s philanthropic arm, brings together experts from education and nonprofit organizations, as well as industry and academia, comprising thousands of educators in dozens of countries around the world, who in turn will impact tens of thousands of students.  Full Story
